Snowbound (2017)

A group of erotic party attendees wake up naked in the snow. In the nearby cabin they find a dead girl and a message: In order to survive, they must decide who is responsible for the girl's death and murder that person accordingly.

Review

"erotic party attendees". Sigh. What have I got myself into?

Okay, the long and short of the plot is simple. Five people who were at an orgy (I'm calling it an orgy - which the flashbacks suggest more or less, is accurate) wake up, drugged, in the snow, in the middle nowhere, naked. They find their way to a remote cabin which holds their underwear and a dead body. They are told one of them is responsible for the body, and the other four need to find out who it is and repeat the actions that caused the death on said person, or they'll all die. It's all very Saw. Except where Tobin Bell has no plan and everybody else is naked.

How much you enjoy the film will probably depend on how much you wanted to see Santa being into S and M.

But anyway, I'm humoring my silliness. As a Saw-type rip off with a twist, it's not actually bad. The players are unremarkable, as is the cinematography, the direction is passable, and the editing unworthy of mention good or bad. The premise is pretty awesome, but the actual execution of it is poor. The film suddenly feels the need to end without resolution, and leaves with such a cryptic hurrah that you're left scratching your head. Which is actually a real shame. With four writers involved, I feel that given the script unchanged to the last maybe ten minutes even I could have re-written a satisfying ending. It reminds me of the end of Holy Grail where the film just stops because they ran out of money.

Aside from that, it is a solid chiller, with and intriguing plot and premise.

I needn't mention the sheer bulk of the titillation on screen - and the fact that some of it is pretty hard to watch, although handled pretty well. I would say that it is worth watching as long as you know what it is you're getting into.

As a complete aside, it is 10 minutes shorter on Amazon Prime than the listed runtime on IMDB, so what they cut out I'll never know.
