MicroReview: Happy Death Day 2U (2019)

Happy Death Day 2U Horror Movie Review

Tree Gelbman discovers that dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead.

Happy Death Day 2U Horror Movie ReviewSo the film begins in the moments of the last film finishing - if that makes sense. Happy Death Day 2U is one of those direct sequels that follows on instantly from the last film - Think Back to the Future. Actually, really think BTTF. While painstaking toils have gone on behind the camera to ensure that everything in the sequel to Happy Death Day - two years previous - looks like it was filmed in parallel, that is where a great deal of the similarities end. With humorous nods to the BTTF trilogy, HDD2U (sorry, I can't keep typing these things out) has more than just thematic similarities with it, with good deal of similar feel as well.

While HDD was a horror film focusing on the slasher elements, with some stylish and nuanced humor, the sequel feels more like a sci fi comedy than the horror I was expecting. It's not bad per se, but not what I expected, wanted, nor enjoyed nearly as much. I suspect that while Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones) returns as director, him taking over as writer has much to do with that.

The cast is as solid as the first and the direction good, it's just the screenplay / story that lacks a spark that was prevalent in the original. It's worth watching, but not a patch on HDD, I'm afraid. I have heard that part three is coming, and there is in fact a setup for a further sequel at the end of this film, which I kind of hope they ignore and go in a different direction. The tease in the final minutes of the film are not what fans of the first will want.

Too much comedy - not enough horror.
