Animal World Sci Fi Thriller Horror Movie ReviewWell, perhaps you should ignore the trailer for this one. I went in expecting a superhero / clown murderous rampage, featuring otherworldly creatures, action, mayhem, and even horror. What I got was, shall we say, something else.

But to clarify, this is one of the best films I've seen in a long time.

Directed by Yan Han (Go Away Mr Tumour), Animal World stars Yifeng Li (Guilty of Mind) as a young man in crippling debt, who after being lied to by his friend ends up on a ship playing in a bizarre life and death, game of rock, paper, scissors. And that just sounds weird when you write it down.

The film is a thriller about card counting. Yes, I know I just said rock, paper, scissors. It is extremely well made, with some stunning direction from Han, and spot on FX. The action scenes are great, and the film paced nicely. It is, weirdly, more exciting than a Hollywood Fast movie and far better acted. It even stars Michael Douglas (Ant Man) as the primary antagonist. It is hard, however, to review without crossing into too many spoilers, lest to say it's a cerebral watch, and stunningly good.

Oh, and the clown? Yeah. No. Think Robert Luketic's 21, but good, and with guns. We're putting the trailer on this one, because you'll watch it for the trailer, but stay for the film.
