MicroReview: Crazy Bitches (2014)

Crazy Bitches Horror Movie Review

A girls' weekend away turns into a nightmare when, one by one, they are killed by their own vanity.

Review

Crazy Bitches Horror Movie ReviewWhoa. This is an odd one to review. 2014's "horror, comedy, sex romp", Crazy Bitches, is a surprisingly well made film. I went in blind expecting zero budget indie fare, something some friends had made with a cell phone over a weekend away, maybe. What I got was a highly produced, well made, and somewhat confused little film.

The film treads little new ground, with a selection of friends away for the weekend in a cabin in the middle of no where, when they start getting bumped off one by one. There is of course a couple of locals who might be the killer - and the group themselves. It's nothing new, but equally, it is pretty well done, too. It just doesn't seem to know what it wants to be.

It is a horror film? Well, there are kills, although mostly off screen. There isn't any chilling tension to mention. No gore, per se. Is it a comedy? It flows like a comedy, sure, but did I laugh? Once? No. Is it a sex romp? There are some very mild scenes of sex, but it is pretty much over-the-clothes or implied, and there isn't any nudity - so it's not really that, either.

Well, is it any good?

Yes. I watched the whole thing and didn't regret doing so. It's engaging - the acting is good across the board, with standout for me being  Andy Gala (Criminal Minds) as the gay BFF to the group of girls - and possibly the funniest character. Writer / director Jane Clark (Meth Head) does a good job, too, and there is a TV show just being released based on it.

My biggest gripe is that at the ending point I was still confused over the who-dunnit part of the plot, which I can't go into here without spoilers. So I won't. But maybe I missed something.

It's an engaging, somewhat bizarre watch, that will, at least by this reviewer remain firmly uncategorized.
