Herstory 101 : John Smith Was a F*ckboy

The first video in a slam poetry series titled HERSTORY 101,  launched on October 8th in honor of Indigenous People's Day.

Lesson #1 is a funny and informative spoken-word piece chronicling the truth behind Pocahontas and her relationship to John Smith. Spoiler alert : Disney got it wrong.


Kyla Garcia is an actress and member of Native Voices theatre company. She most recently performed in Mary Katherine Nagle's Sovereignty portraying a Cherokee lawyer battling to reinstate the Cherokee Nation's sovereignty and jurisdiction. Kyla has also been seen in Marvel's Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. and was the winner of the 2013 Tracy "Twinkie" Byrd's Monologue Slam for The Hollywood Black Film Festival.


Casey Gates is an emerging writer and director, creating and spotlighting original, female-driven work through her digital initiative #LadyBrain. In 2016 she received a BlogHer Voice of the Year Award for her mission-statement film “What Is Lady Brain?”. She went on to co-write and direct Girl Code which premiered at the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival “Women in Cinema” block and also received the Best Short Screenwriting award at the Columbia Gorge International Film Festival.
